What is Keyword Planner?

Keyword Planner is a tool that functions like a search network. It uses various historical statistics related to the keywords search results you use inside the tool, and it presents keyword ideas, as well as the average number of searches for that keyword. Keyword Planner also shows keyword traffic estimates, which include the number of clicks you might get for different bids and budget. The estimates are presented inside graphs and tables, which are generated based on the historical data inside the tool’s database. The graphs and tables enable you to view the most important data and the relevant information about the keywords estimates.

How to use Keyword Planner?

In order to access Keyword Planner, go to your AdWords account (you have to sign in first). Find the option “Tool and Analysis” in the header and choose “Keyword Planner” from the drop-down menu.


You will now access the tool and you will see four options available in the Keyword Planner:


1) Search for new keywords and ad group ideas

The greatest advantage of using Keyword Planner for searching new keyword ideas is that you get estimates on keyword searches in the previous period, depending on the date range you have chosen. Not only will you get new ideas on which keyword to add to your keyword list, but you will also be able to sort the keywords based on relevance, using the estimates available for each keyword.

So, in case you already have some ideas for keywords you want to use, this option will provide insights into whether those keywords are really worth the work. Although you might think that a certain keyword should be used in your campaign, that keyword actually might trigger a few searches, which means that the number of opportunities, of your ad being shown for that keyword, is lower.

In addition, this option can also help with getting ideas on long-tail keywords. Although long-tail keywords are more specific phrases, with lower search volume, they are more likely to lead to a conversion, which is why you need to consider using long-tail keywords in your campaign. Estimates for long-tail keywords are also available inside the Keyword Planner results.

Use Keyword Planner to enter one or more options available:

– Words or phrases that describe your product

– The URL of the landing page from your website

– Select the product category

Additionally you can choose targeting options that will help you narrow down the search. After you have finished filling out these data, you can click on “Get ideas” in order to generate a table of estimates based on the data you have provided.

4) Multiply keyword lists to get new keyword ideas

Google – Google network setting is chosen by default. If you want to include Google search partners into the estimates, choose the corresponding option. Google search partners are Google’s websites such as Google Maps, as well as the websites that show Google ads.

Negative keywords – Using a negative keyword means that your ad will not be shown if the negative keyword is used in the search query. Include / Exclude – The following option allows you to add a specific keyword you want to be included into the search that will generate estimates. If you want to exclude a keyword from this estimate, use negative keyword option available in the targeting options.
